A better microscope...
The best scanning electron microscopes can show only fuzzy pictures of
atoms. To see anything smaller you must use smaller wavelengths,
. For example the large wavelengths of
water waves don't show any effects of a small vertical pole in their
paths. But the shorter wavelengths of light give a shadow for that pole.

Energy and wavelength are inversely related: E is proportional to

. So the smaller the particles that
you want to see, the more energy you need from your accelerator.
