Charged Particles Acceleration

Charged particles can be accelerated by electric fields. In a linear accelerator the field is due to traveling electromagnetic (e-m) waves. The particles ride the e-m wave like surfers. Those behind the bunch get a bigger boost; those in front get less, so the bunch stays together on the wave front.
