Centre objectives

To create a scientific environment at the forefront of soft condensed matter studies, and become the leading center in this field in the Nordic countries.

Summary of main activities

Creation of a Center of Excellence (CoE) to approach the study of soft materials and complex systems from a fundamental point of view. The Center will focus on physics, but also related geological and biological issues will be studied. The interests of this CoE will range from flow in porous media to the behavior of sand, from complex fluids to biopolymers, and from fracture processes to genetic regulatory systems. This activity thus links passive soft condensed matter and active life-like materials and systems. The CoE will be a joint national center based on activities at NTNU, UiO and IFE. The group has an established history of close collaboration and is Norway’s leading group in this field. The group’s goal is to become the leading center for soft condensed matter studies in the Nordic countries.

Outline of organization Data for leaders, groups, senior scientists, Post.docs, Ph.D. students etc

CoE-manager: Alex Hansen, Professor of Physics, NTNU
8+2 additional senior scientists, 8 graduate students and 8 post docs, 2 guest scientists, 4 technical staff and 1 administrative staff.

The Center will be a joint organization between NTNU, UiO and IFE, with the administrative center located at NTNU.
